Blank Space Shawl – Free Crochet Pattern

How crazy is it that June is almost over? I feel like time lately is going both slowly and quickly – is that possible? I guess it’s that the days are long but the weeks are short. As usual, I’ve been filling my extra time at home with lots of fun crochet projects. I’ve been on sort of a shawl kick lately, and I’m really excited to share this one with you!

First, let’s talk about the yarn. Have you tried out Wecrochet yet? They are the dedicated to crochet counterpart of Knitpicks. They carry all the same yarn, but also have fun crochet tools and patterns. It’s my favorite place to shop for yarn these days!

For this particular project I used their Bare Stroll Fingering and Stroll Gradient. The Stroll Gradient is really cool because it has long color changes and works almost as a true ombre yarn. That means you can get a fabulous fade effect without tons of ends to weave in! Win/win, right? I used the colorway Multiverse. It has such vibrant colors that really pop against the bare yarn. Both of these yarns are fingering weight, 75% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon. In other words – it’s sock yarn. I love using sock yarn for shawls because it has a fabulous drape that isn’t too heavy.

Yarn  WeCrochet Bare Stroll, 75% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon, 450 yards

Other  Darning needle, blocking mat and pins

Gauge  24 st x 18 rows, blocked = 4” in moss sts

Notes
•Ch 1 at the start of each row does not count as a st.
•Shawl is worked from the skinny end to the wider end.
•Pattern is written for two colors, with each row indicated as mc or cc.
•You may carry your yarn along the edge rather than cut after each row.
•This pattern utilizes moss stitch, where sc are worked into ch sp.

  MC Row 1: Sc in 2^nd st from hook and each st across, ch 1, turn. (3 sc) 

  MC Row 2: Sc 1, 2sc in next st, sc 1, ch 1, turn. (4 sc)

CC Row 19: Sc 1, sc2tog, *ch 1, sk 1, sc 1*, repeat from * to * until 2 sts remain,  2 sc in next st, sc 1, ch 1, turn. (8 sc) 

  CC Row 20: Sc 1, 2sc in next st, *ch 1, sk 1, sc 1*, repeat from * to * until 2 sts remain, sc 2, ch 1, turn. (9 sc)

  MC Row 21: Sc 1, sc2tog, sc 1, *ch 1, sk 1, sc 1*, repeat from * to * until 2 sts remain,  2 sc in next st, sc 1, ch 1, turn. (9 sc) 

  MC Row 22: Sc 1, 2sc in next st, *ch 1, sk 1, sc 1*, repeat from * to * until 3 sts remain, sc 3, ch 1, turn. (10 sc)

Rows 23 – 302: Repeat rows 19 – 22, continuing to alternate colors every two rows.

CC Row 303: Sc in each st and ch sp across, ch 1, turn. (154 sc)

CC Row 304: *Sc 3, picot*, repeat from * to * across. (154 sc, 51 picot)

Finishing:

Fasten off yarn, weave in all ends, and block your shawl using your preferred method.
