I don’t know about you, but in times like this I am so happy to have crochet as a distraction. The problem is, I’m having a rather hard time focusing on my projects. At least, on the bigger ones. Yesterday I was really feeling like I wanted to crochet to keep my hands (and mind) occupied, but I kept getting distracted by Facebook or news alerts. I’m thankful for both of those things – it’s pretty awesome that we can get news in an instant – but sometimes it gets to be a lot.
I decided a simple project would probably be best. It’s been awhile since I have made any sort of basket or holder, so I thought now would be the perfect time. This little hook holder would easily be adjusted to different sizes. Make it shallow for a ring dish, taller for a pencil holder, etc.
Difficulty: Easy
Yarn: I used Malabrigo Chunky – a bulky 5 weight Merino Wool. It’s quite pretty! I often have a hard time using bulky yarn with a small hook, but this was a dream to work with and it didn’t hurt my hands at all. Bernat Maker Home Dec or a similar yarn would also work well.
Hook: G+ (4.5mm)
You’ll also need: Yarn needle, stitch marker, scissors
Abbreviations:
MC magic circle
ST/STS stitch/stitches
SL ST slip stitch
SK skip
CH chain
SC single crochet
LHDC linked half double crochet
Special Stitch, LHDC:
Insert hook into the vertical bar of previous stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.
For your first LHDC of each round, use the second chain from the hook as the first vertical bar.
To Begin: Make a magic circle; CH1 (does not count as a stitch).
Round 1: 6SC in MC; join with a SL ST to the top of the first SC. (6)
Round 2: CH1. 2SC in each ST around; join with a SL ST to the top of the first SC. (12)
Round 3: CH1. *2SC in next ST, SC in next ST* around; join with a SL ST to the top of the first SC. (18)
Round 4: CH1. *2SC in next ST, SC in each of the next 2 STS* around; join with a SL ST to the top of the first SC. (24)
Round 5: CH1. *2SC in next ST, SC in each of the next 3 STS* around; join with a SL ST to the top of the first SC. (30)
Round 6: CH1. *2SC in next ST, SC in each of the next 4 STS* around; join with a SL ST to the top of the first SC. (36)
Round 7: CH1. LHDC in the back loops only of each ST around; join with a SL ST to the top of the first LHDC. (36)
Round 8 – 18 (or to desired height): CH1. LHDC in each ST around; join with a SL ST to the top of the first LHDC. (36)
Round 19: CH1. SLST in ST around; join with a SL ST to the top of the first LHDC. (36)
Finish off and weave in ends.
